Mumbai, February 18: FedEx, the express transportation company, announced on Wednesday that it will invest over ₹2,500 crore in partnership with the Adani Group to establish a fully automated cargo hub at Navi Mumbai International Airport.

In a statement, FedEx noted that the long-term investment will support a facility spanning 300,000 square feet, designed as a regional consolidation and redistribution center developed in collaboration with Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL).

This center aims to leverage the multi-faceted infrastructure of NMIA to strengthen the international trade corridor in Western India. Once operational, it is expected to create over 6,000 direct and indirect job opportunities in logistics, warehousing, transportation, and related services.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the cargo terminal site of Navi Mumbai International Airport, attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, AAHL Director Jeet Adani, FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam, and FedEx CEO (Airline) and COO (International) Richard Smith.

During the event, Jeet Adani remarked, “This development reflects NMIA’s long-term vision of building integrated infrastructure that will enhance India’s trade competitiveness. Due to its proximity to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, industrial corridors, and multi-modal transport networks, NMIA is uniquely positioned to support high-growth export sectors and elevate Maharashtra’s role as a global logistics gateway.”

Kami Vishwanathan, President of FedEx MEISA, stated, “India’s competitiveness in global trade increasingly depends on the reliability and speed of its logistics infrastructure. Establishing this hub at NMIA provides us with an opportunity to integrate the strength of our global network with one of India’s fastest-growing trade corridors, offering customers greater certainty, speed, and efficiency.”

This development is set to enhance trade flows to Southeast Asia, West Asia, Europe, and the United States, establishing direct global network connectivity within India’s key trade corridors. Equipped with advanced automated sorting systems, dimensional scanning, high-speed screening technology, and dedicated aircraft parking bays, this center will enable simultaneous processing of incoming and outgoing shipments, improving routing flexibility and transit time predictability, particularly for high-value and time-sensitive sectors like electronics, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, and perishables.

The company’s statement further indicated that improved reliability is expected to strengthen the export-import capabilities of micro, small, and medium enterprises, while also reducing logistics costs and speeding up turnaround times.

The initial operational capacity of NMIA’s cargo infrastructure is approximately 0.5 million metric tons (MMT) per year, which will be gradually expanded to about 3.25 million metric tons in the final development phase. This planned expansion supports the airport’s long-term strategy to establish the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as one of India’s most advanced air freight and logistics gateways.

Additionally, based on nearly three decades of operations in India, this hub expands FedEx’s dedicated presence and reinforces NMIA’s role as an integrated aviation and multimodal trade platform in global supply chains.
