EU Takes Firm Stance on Iran and Hormuz Strait, Signals Increased Sanctions

New Delhi, April 21: European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas adopted a strong stance on Iran and regional security issues during a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council.

She emphasized the need to expand EU sanctions to include Iran’s nuclear program, missile initiatives, and support for regional terrorist groups in any lasting solution.

Kallas criticized the instability regarding navigation freedom in the Hormuz Strait, labeling it irresponsible and stressing the importance of keeping the strait open and free for all.

In a post on social media platform X, Kallas stated, “Changing our position daily on whether the Hormuz Strait is open or closed is irresponsible. Passage through this strait must always remain free. The EU has reached a political agreement to expand our sanctions and target those who violate navigation freedom.”

She further added, “None of us want to see Iran equipped with nuclear weapons. We agree with our regional partners that any lasting solution must include not only the nuclear issue but also Iran’s missile program and its ongoing support for terrorist groups.”

Meanwhile, as the temporary ceasefire between Iran and the United States nears its end, U.S. President Donald Trump has once again threatened Iran.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote, “Iran has violated the ceasefire multiple times.” This statement comes as the deadline for the temporary ceasefire approaches, with uncertainty surrounding the second round of Islamabad talks. The ceasefire was announced on April 8 at 5:30 AM Indian time.

A clear lack of trust is evident on both sides. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker MB Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi all express skepticism regarding U.S. intentions.
