Shillong, June 30: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated on Tuesday that entrepreneurship is the foundation for sustainable economic growth and job creation. Launching the state government’s ‘Achievers of the Month’ program, he emphasized that the initiative aims to recognize individuals excelling in various sectors and inspire more people to embrace entrepreneurship.
During the event in Shillong, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s responsibility to create policies, infrastructure, and institutional support that foster a conducive environment for entrepreneurs. However, he noted that real economic progress is driven by the efforts of entrepreneurs themselves.
“The government lays the groundwork, but it is entrepreneurship that propels the economy,” he remarked, describing it as the strongest basis for long-term economic development and sustainable livelihoods.
Through this initiative, successful individuals from various fields will share their inspiring journeys, illustrating how government schemes and support helped transform their ideas into thriving enterprises.
Sangma stressed the importance of showcasing success stories in society to motivate others. “We want to bring your stories to the world. What seems ordinary to you can inspire others,” he stated.
The Chief Minister announced that July will be celebrated as ‘Entrepreneur Month’ in the state. During this time, storytelling sessions, public outreach programs, and social media campaigns will highlight the stories of successful entrepreneurs in Meghalaya.
He acknowledged that establishing a successful business is not easy. It involves uncertainty, financial risks, and sometimes sleepless nights. However, passion, perseverance, and continuous effort are the hallmarks of a successful entrepreneur.
Sangma urged youth and new entrepreneurs not to be disheartened by failures or negative comments and to stay committed to their goals.
The state government is actively working to promote entrepreneurship in agriculture, sports, music, and other emerging sectors. He shared that many grassroots entrepreneurs have successfully expanded their small businesses to reach larger cities through initiatives like PRIME and its rural outreach programs.
During the event, 50 entrepreneurs from various parts of Meghalaya were honored for their achievements. They engaged in discussions with the Chief Minister, providing suggestions for business expansion and strengthening entrepreneurship in the state.
Sangma revealed that the ‘Achievers of the Month’ initiative will also recognize individuals contributing significantly in sports, agriculture, education, and public service in the future, fostering a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and excellence in the state.
