West End, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : England showcased a commanding performance against Sri Lanka, winning the first match of their three-match T20 series by 119 runs on September 16, 2026. The victory was bolstered by captain Harry Brook’s impressive century and Jos Buttler’s explosive 80-run innings.
In the match held at Utilita Bowl, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that backfired spectacularly. England took full advantage, amassing a staggering total of 254 runs for the loss of four wickets in their 20 overs.
Buttler, the former captain, opened the innings and scored 80 runs off just 44 balls, hitting three sixes and eight fours. Although he had the chance to secure a century, he ultimately fell short.
However, Brook made no such mistake. Coming in at number three, he completed his second T20 century, remaining unbeaten on 114 runs from 49 balls, including six sixes and ten fours. He reached his half-century in just 20 balls and his century in 42.
Other notable contributions came from Anurin Donald, who scored 12 runs off five balls, Tom Banton with 10 runs from 10 balls, and Will Jacks, who added 21 runs from 12 balls.
For Sri Lanka, Dushmantha Chameera, Dunith Wellalage, Ehsan Mani, and Wanindu Hasaranga each claimed one wicket.
Facing a daunting target of 255 runs, Sri Lanka struggled and was bowled out for just 135 runs in 19 overs. Dunith Wellalage was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 33 runs, followed by Dasun Shanaka with 24 runs.
On the bowling front, Sony Baker was exceptional for England, taking three wickets for just 12 runs in four overs. Liam Dawson and Jamie Overton each took two wickets, while Josh Tong, Will Jacks, and Adil Rashid picked up one wicket each.
Harry Brook was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance.
The second match of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 11 PM Indian time.
