England Announces Playing XI for T20 Series Opener Against India; Jofra Archer Excluded

Durham, June 30: England has announced its playing XI for the first match of the T20 series against India, scheduled for Wednesday. Fast bowler Jofra Archer will not participate in this match.

Following the announcement of the playing XI for the first T20 match at Chester-le-Street against India, England captain Harry Brook reaffirmed his commitment to international cricket.

England made two changes from the team that lost to India in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Fast bowler Saqib Mahmood has been included in place of Jamie Overton, and Luke Wood replaces Jofra Archer. Archer and fellow fast bowler Josh Tongue have been rested after their recent Test series against New Zealand.

Brook will lead England, facing one of his biggest challenges yet. After guiding the team to the World Cup semi-finals, the 26-year-old Brook is also a strong contender to become England’s next Test captain.

Before the series opener, Brook stated that representing England is his top priority. This is why he has distanced himself from most franchise leagues.

“I have fully committed myself to England cricket. I do not want to play any franchise cricket except for The Hundred. Everything I do is aimed at playing cricket for England. My focus, both on and off the field, is to perform my best for England. That’s why I don’t participate in the IPL, PSL, or any other franchise competitions,” Brook said.

Brook believes that not playing in franchise tournaments gives him valuable time to prepare physically for all three formats. He mentioned, “Not playing franchise cricket means I have periods in my calendar when I am not playing matches. I focus on my fitness and prepare to play in all three formats, which has been my dream since childhood.”

The right-handed batsman downplayed speculation regarding the future Test captaincy of England. He remarked, “Whether I become England’s captain in Test cricket or not, I will find joy in continuing to play for England.”

England’s playing XI for the first T20 match against India includes: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Harry Brook (captain), Jacob Bethel, Tom Banton, Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, and Luke Wood.
