USA Secures Spot in Round of 16 by Defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina at FIFA World Cup

San Francisco, July 2: In an impressive display, co-host USA triumphed over Bosnia and Herzegovina with a 2-0 victory in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. This win, held at the Bay Area Stadium, secured America’s place in the knockout stage.

From the outset, the USA showcased aggressive gameplay, maintaining control of the ball. Folarin Balogun nearly scored a stunning goal, but it was ruled offside. However, during injury time of the first half, Balogun seized another opportunity. With a brilliant pass from Malik Tillman, he outmaneuvered defenders and sent the ball past goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, giving the USA a 1-0 lead.

Balogun came close to scoring again during the first half’s extra time, but his shot hit the crossbar. In the second half, Bosnia and Herzegovina attempted a comeback. A significant setback for the USA occurred in the 64th minute when VAR intervention led to Balogun receiving a red card, forcing the team to play with ten men for nearly half an hour.

Despite being a player down, the USA displayed remarkable composure, denying their opponents any chance to equalize. In the final moments of the match, Malik Tillman scored a fantastic goal from a free-kick, extending the lead to 2-0. Earlier, a goal from Christian Pulisic had been disallowed due to offside.

This victory marks only the second time the USA has defeated a European team in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup. It also ended a streak of 12 consecutive losses against European nations. This is the fourth time in the last four World Cups that the USA has reached the Round of 16. The team, under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, will face Belgium on July 7 at Seattle Stadium. A win in this match would allow the USA to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002 and only the second time in the modern era.
