New Delhi, March 31: In ancient India, yoga was primarily practiced by sages and hermits. Its presence in the lives of ordinary people was limited. However, over time, the significance of yoga has been recognized, making it a popular means of health and mental peace, not just in India but worldwide.
One of the key yoga poses is the headstand, known as “Shirshasana” in Sanskrit. The term combines two words: ‘Shirsha’ meaning ‘head’ and ‘Asana’ meaning ‘pose’ or ‘posture.’ This pose is beneficial for strengthening both the body and mind. In this position, a person balances on their head, enhancing blood circulation and energizing the brain.
Thus, the headstand is not merely a simple exercise; it is a practice that fosters physical strength, mental focus, and self-confidence. Its effects are also visible on the skin and hair, leading to a radiant complexion, reduced hair fall, and gradual alleviation of various skin-related issues.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Shirshasana is considered the “king of asanas.” It enhances blood flow to the brain, improving concentration, mental clarity, and memory. This advanced yoga pose also promotes balance, arm strength, and overall physical health.
To practice this pose, start by laying down a yoga mat. Kneel on the mat and interlock your fingers, placing your hands on the ground. Then, gently position your head between your palms and slowly lift your legs to establish balance. When you feel your body weight shifting onto your head and arms, bend your knees and bring them close to your chest. This position serves as a good starting point for beginners.
Beginners should hold the pose for 10-30 seconds, gradually increasing to 5 minutes with regular practice. However, individuals with high blood pressure, dizziness, neck issues, or cataracts should avoid this pose.
