New Delhi, September 8 (Daily Kiran) : The demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in India continues to surge, with sales reaching a record high in August 2026. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on September 8, the retail sales of EVs jumped 52.9% year-on-year, totaling 298,448 units. This growth has increased the overall market share of EVs to 12.3%, up from 9.5% in August 2025.
FADA reported that all four major categories of electric vehicles—two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, and commercial vehicles—recorded their highest monthly retail sales to date. This trend indicates that electric mobility is becoming a significant component of the Indian automotive market.
In August, electric two-wheeler sales rose by 67.05% to 183,204 units. However, this figure shows a slight decline compared to July 2026, when sales reached 204,362 units. TVS Motor led this segment with 48,938 units sold, followed by Bajaj Auto with 41,114 units and Ather Energy with 28,757 units. Ola Electric, however, sold 13,852 units in August, which is approximately 29% lower than the previous year. Consequently, the market share for electric two-wheelers increased to 10.7%, compared to 7.7% a year earlier.
Sales of electric three-wheelers also saw significant growth, climbing 25.28% to 79,846 units. The penetration of electric vehicles in this category rose to 65.3%, up from 56.6% last year. Bajaj Auto topped the segment with 13,833 units sold, while Mahindra Last Mile Mobility followed closely with 12,806 units. TVS Motor sold 4,415 electric three-wheelers.
The electric commercial vehicle segment emerged as the fastest-growing category, with sales nearly tripling to 4,702 units in August 2026, compared to just 1,631 units in August 2025. This segment’s market share increased to 5.18%, up from 2.06% a year ago. Tata Motors led this category with 1,416 units sold, followed by Euler Motors with 849 units and Saini Heavy Industry India with 605 units.
Electric passenger vehicle sales grew by 51.89% to 30,696 units, resulting in a market share increase to 7.6%, compared to 5.8% last year. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) maintained its lead with 13,158 units sold, while Mahindra & Mahindra sold 6,464 units and JSW MG Motor India sold 4,622 units. New entrants like VinFast Auto India and Tesla India Motors & Energy reported sales of 2,199 and 116 units, respectively.
FADA President Sai Giridhar remarked that August 2026 marked the largest month for the Indian electric mobility industry in its history. He highlighted the remarkable performance of the electric commercial vehicle segment, noting that the electrification of fleets has moved from testing phases to actual purchasing decisions.
Giridhar also pointed out that despite it being a non-festive season, the market share of electric two-wheelers remains above 10%. Electric three-wheelers have also transitioned structurally within the electric category. He emphasized that this growth is no longer solely driven by government incentives. Factors such as lower operational costs, an expanding charging network, growing consumer confidence, the PM e-Drive scheme, and favorable state policies are collectively bringing electric vehicles into the mainstream.
Importantly, he noted that total auto sales are still below last year’s festive peak levels, yet nearly all EV categories are maintaining record levels. This trend signals the long-term strength of electric vehicles in the Indian market.
