Election Commission Orders West Bengal Police to Enforce Pending Arrest Warrants

Kolkata, March 28: The Election Commission of India has directed the West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police to implement all pending non-bailable arrest warrants within the next ten days. The Commission stated that individuals against whom such warrants have been issued must be apprehended and detained during this period. This directive aims to maintain law and order and ensure a smooth electoral process in the state.

The Commission reminded that, due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, all state government employees are under the Commission’s authority during their duties. Any negligence in duty could lead to disciplinary action against the concerned officials.

To enforce the arrest warrants, the Commission has instructed sub-divisional police officers and deputy superintendents to compile a list of offenders and conduct special raids and search operations to apprehend them. Officials have also been directed to identify crime-prone areas and violent or habitual offenders in their jurisdictions and ensure appropriate action is taken against them.

Additionally, the Commission has emphasized the need to guarantee the security of all political campaigning events, regardless of the party, and to ensure the safety of election-related personnel.

West Bengal will hold assembly elections in two phases. The first phase will take place on April 23 across 152 assembly constituencies, while the second phase is scheduled for April 29 in the remaining 142 constituencies. The results will be announced on May 4.
