Kolkata, April 22: One day before the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Election Commission announced a relaxation of certain motorcycle restrictions on Wednesday. This decision allows individuals with valid identification to use motorcycles during the restricted hours.
In a new notification, the Commission stated that office-goers with proper ID will be exempt from the motorcycle movement restrictions. Previously, the Commission had already granted exemptions to app-based motorcycle riders and food delivery personnel.
Just a day earlier, the Commission had issued a separate notification imposing strict bans on motorcycle usage ahead of the voting. According to the Commission, these measures are intended to prevent motorcycle rallies from dominating the election period and to ensure voter safety.
The detailed notification indicates that motorcycle rallies or processions are prohibited in sensitive areas two days prior to voting. Additionally, motorcycle movement is restricted from 6 PM to 6 AM during this period.
However, exemptions are made for emergency medical services and essential family needs. The Commission has also prohibited riding on the back of motorcycles. According to the notification, riding on the back of motorcycles will not be permitted from 6 AM to 6 PM two days before voting.
Exemptions are also granted for transporting school students, medical emergencies, and certain family necessities. The Commission clarified that anyone seeking exemptions beyond the specified categories must obtain prior written permission from the relevant police station.
Furthermore, the Commission has instructed district administration and police officials to ensure strict adherence to these guidelines. The first phase of the Assembly elections in West Bengal will take place on Thursday, with voting scheduled for 152 assembly seats across several districts under tight security.
