Dibrugarh, April 23: Central Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched a sharp attack on Congress and its allies in the INDIA bloc on Wednesday. He accused them of opposing the Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill, 2026, aimed at increasing women’s participation in legislative bodies.
Speaking at a press conference at the BJP district office in Dibrugarh, Sonowal stated that the opposition to the proposed bill reflects a lack of commitment to ensuring adequate representation for women in the country’s political system. The bill seeks to reserve 33 percent of seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
Sonowal emphasized that the BJP and its supporters will continue to protest against the forces opposing this bill and will mobilize public opinion. He asserted that there can be no compromise when it comes to women’s rights, dignity, and equal participation in governance.
He described the bill as a historic step towards ensuring women’s rightful share in decision-making processes at all levels. Equal participation of women and men is essential for the country’s overall and inclusive development.
The MP from Dibrugarh expressed hope that the recently introduced law would receive broad bipartisan support, given its significance in promoting gender equality and inclusive governance. However, he expressed disappointment with the stance taken by Congress and its allies on this issue.
Sonowal pointed out that women constitute nearly half of the country’s population, yet their representation in legislative bodies is limited to only 15-16 percent. This imbalance is not only unjust but also destabilizing, necessitating corrective policy measures.
He criticized Congress for failing to take decisive and sustained steps to ensure adequate political representation for women, despite being in power for several decades. In contrast, he highlighted the BJP-led NDA government’s focus on women-centric policies under the leadership of the Prime Minister.
He referenced key initiatives such as ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’, ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana’, ‘Ujjwala Yojana’, and ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, noting their significant contributions to women’s social, economic, and financial empowerment.
Sonowal asserted that women should not merely be beneficiaries of welfare schemes but should play a leading and active role in governance, policy-making, and nation-building.
He warned that political parties opposing measures aimed at strengthening women’s rights and representation could face a strong and decisive response from women across the country in the future.
