Kolkata, August 15: During an Independence Day flag hoisting event on Saturday, eggs were thrown at Upasana Chaudhary, a youth leader affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee. The incident occurred at Ashutosh College in Kolkata.
Upasana expressed her anger over the egg-throwing incident, alleging that outsiders attempted to disrupt the event in the presence of police. She accused members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of attacking her.
On Saturday morning, Upasana and other TMC leaders visited Ashutosh College, where she also serves as the president of the Trinamool Student Council (TMC). They intended to hoist the national flag, but were denied entry due to a lack of identification.
Police officers responsible for security prevented them from gathering in front of the college, escalating tensions in the area. During this time, eggs were thrown at Upasana, hitting her head and body.
Following the incident, tensions rose significantly. Upasana took to Facebook Live to voice her strong opposition, claiming that outsiders were present at the college.
She stated, “The police did not inform us of anything; they didn’t even check our identification! Yet, when we went to hoist the national flag, we were labeled as ‘outsiders.’ Members of the BJP and ABVP threw eggs at us.”
She also accused the police of aiding the attackers and failing to take any action. However, both the BJP and ABVP denied these allegations.
An ABVP member at Ashutosh College remarked that Upasana Chaudhary had become a target of public anger. He claimed that those dissatisfied with the TMC expressed their frustration through this act.
Since the recent West Bengal assembly elections, where the BJP came to power, numerous TMC leaders, former ministers, and councilors have been arrested on various charges, including extortion, assault, harassment, and threats.
In many instances, when TMC leaders were taken into police custody, angry crowds threw eggs at them, chanting “thief.” Protesters have dubbed the egg-throwing incidents as “egg therapy.”
