Kinshasa, August 7: The Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to escalate. According to the latest update from health officials, 4,053 cases of Ebola have been confirmed, resulting in 1,850 deaths.
Currently, 694 patients are either in isolation or receiving treatment in hospitals, while 793 individuals have recovered and returned home. However, conditions in eastern DRC are reported to be the most severe.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced on Thursday that 330 children have died due to this outbreak. Essential health services in Ituri province have been severely impacted.
UNICEF stated, “Children account for nearly a quarter of all confirmed cases, but they represent about one-third of the deaths. Young children under five are the most affected, with a mortality rate more than double that of adults.”
The organization highlighted that fear of Ebola and disruptions in health centers are causing families to avoid seeking hospital care. This has led to a significant decline in childhood vaccinations, maternal health, and other essential services.
John Agbor, UNICEF’s representative in DRC, remarked, “The Ebola outbreak is disrupting the entire health system. It will directly affect malaria, diarrhea, and other treatable diseases, which are the leading causes of child mortality.”
Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) warned on Wednesday that the situation in eastern DRC is more serious than ever. The organization noted that infections are spreading at an unprecedented rate, with no signs of slowing down. Doctors Without Borders reported that a lack of hospital beds, pressure on medical staff, and fear within communities are preventing patients from receiving timely treatment.
