Ankara, 11 August (HS) — Türkiye was shaken once again by a strong earthquake on Sunday evening, as a 6.1 magnitude tremor hit the north-western province of Balıkesir, causing fears of extensive damage. Several multi-storey buildings collapsed and many people were reported injured. Relief and rescue operations have been launched in the affected areas.

According to Türkiye Today, the quake struck at 7:53 pm local time, with its epicentre located in the city of Sındırgı, at a depth of 11 kilometres. Türkiye’s Disaster Management Agency reported that the tremors were felt as far as Istanbul. Citizens have been urged to stay away from damaged buildings.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said that teams from the Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and other agencies were on the ground carrying out relief and rescue operations. He added that so far, there had been no reports of major casualties.
It is worth noting that in 2023, Türkiye was hit by a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that claimed over 53,000 lives and destroyed large numbers of buildings across 11 southern and south-eastern provinces. The disaster also impacted neighbouring Syria, where 6,000 people lost their lives.
