Iranian Revolutionary Guards Claim Cargo Ship Sunk by Mine in Hormuz Strait

Iranian Revolutionary Guards report a cargo ship sank after hitting a mine in the Hormuz Strait, marking a significant event amid rising tensions.

London/Tehran, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Iranian media reported on Wednesday that a cargo ship sank in the Hormuz Strait after allegedly striking a mine. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made this claim, sharing videos that purportedly show the aftermath of the incident. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also confirmed that two commercial vessels were targeted by projectile attacks in separate incidents.

According to Tasnim, a news outlet close to the IRGC, the cargo ship was carrying 2,500 containers and caught fire following the collision. This incident is reportedly the first of its kind since the onset of recent hostilities, involving a ship sinking due to a mine strike.

The Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) has yet to clarify how many crew members were on board the ship or if there were any casualties from the incident.

The IRGC stated that the vessel was navigating through a route near Hormuz that was deemed unsafe and unauthorized. Iran has been issuing warnings for several days, emphasizing that any ship deviating from designated paths would bear the consequences.

In a related note, the UKMTO reported two separate incidents involving tankers in the Hormuz Strait. On Tuesday, an unidentified projectile struck a 50,000-ton cargo ship as it entered the strait. Fortunately, the vessel sustained only minor damage, and there were no reported injuries, allowing it to continue its journey safely.

In another incident, a 19,000-ton container ship was hit by a projectile while exiting the waterway. This vessel also suffered minor damage, with no injuries reported, and it too was able to proceed with its voyage.
