Mumbai, February 27: Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is looking forward to a crucial match against Bayern Munich this Saturday. The team is still reeling from a disappointing exit from the Champions League, following a 4-1 defeat to Atalanta. After a promising 2-0 first-leg win, Dortmund’s hopes were dashed midweek, leaving them eager to turn their season around.
Kobel spoke to AFP and other media shortly after returning from Italy. He believes that the upcoming clash with Bayern could provide the motivation his team needs. “It’s a tough situation. Sometimes it’s easier said than done, but we must focus on the next game,” Kobel stated. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and harnessing good energy in training leading up to Saturday’s match.
Both Dortmund and Bayern have only lost once in the Bundesliga this season, but Dortmund trails Bayern by eight points. A win against Bayern would not make Dortmund title favorites, but it could bring them closer as the season progresses, especially with Bayern juggling commitments in both European and domestic competitions.
While some players may seek distractions to manage their nerves, Kobel embraces the pressure. “I’m a big fan of feeling the nerves a little bit. It sharpens your focus,” he explained. He believes that rather than fighting against nerves, players should learn to channel them positively.
In the recent match against Atalanta, a late mistake by Kobel contributed to Dortmund’s elimination. He apologized to his teammates and called for a strong performance against Bayern. “We have to win. If we achieve success, everything can change quickly,” he remarked.
Kobel joined Dortmund shortly after their last German Cup victory in 2021 and has come close to winning trophies with the club. He was present during the heartbreaking loss to Bayern in the Bundesliga title race last season and witnessed Dortmund’s near victory in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.
Despite the recent setbacks, Dortmund is showing signs of improvement under coach Niko Kovac. The team is just three points shy of their best-ever points tally at this stage of the season. However, Bayern remains formidable, having dropped fewer points than any other team in Europe’s top leagues this term.
“If you watch Bayern this season, it’s clear they are an amazing team. They win by significant margins,” Kobel noted. He reiterated the need for Dortmund to focus on their own performance, improve as a team, and strive to compete with Bayern. “Failure is part of the game, too,” he concluded.
