DMK Executive Committee Meeting to Discuss Major Organizational Changes

Chennai, August 22: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) will hold an Executive Committee meeting today. It is anticipated that party leaders will announce significant organizational changes following their defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The proposed changes could increase the number of DMK’s district units from the current 78 to approximately 110.

According to party sources, under this plan, each district secretary will be assigned responsibility for two or three assembly constituencies. This meeting comes amid growing demands for organizational elections and changes within the party’s current administrative structure. The leadership believes that creating smaller district units will enhance oversight, strengthen the party at the assembly constituency level, and improve coordination between officials and headquarters.

The reorganization process was initiated after a comprehensive review of the performance of former ministers and district secretaries during the previous DMK government and the assembly election campaign. Reports prepared by senior party leaders and the DMK’s political strategy firm, PENL, have been submitted to party president M.K. Stalin.

Reports indicate that an assessment of the current officials’ performance has been conducted, highlighting dissatisfaction among grassroots workers in several districts. Based on data and internal feedback, changes have been recommended for various district units. It is believed that delays in finalizing names for new district secretaries are partly due to this review. The party leadership is evaluating whether to retain current officials, alter their responsibilities, or replace them before finalizing the new organizational structure.

The reorganization committee has reportedly recommended assigning state or zonal responsibilities to district secretaries over the age of 70. This proposal aims to leverage the experience of senior leaders while also creating opportunities for younger officials. Another proposal under consideration involves appointing youth wing officials as district secretaries.

Party leaders believe that bringing younger officials into key organizational positions could invigorate workers and enhance the DMK’s outreach among new voters. A senior leader currently serving as Deputy General Secretary has also suggested conducting extensive elections within the organization, starting from the branch level up to the party headquarters. The Executive Committee is expected to discuss these proposals before granting authority to finalize the reorganization. If any announcements are made, it would mark the most significant organizational change for the DMK in recent years.
