Mumbai, April 4: In the 1990s, numerous actresses ruled the cinema, but one stood out for her rapid ascent in both South Indian and Hindi films. Tragically, her untimely death shook the Hindi film industry. We are talking about Divya Bharti, who passed away on April 5, 1993.
By the early ’90s, Divya Bharti had become a shining star in Hindi cinema, captivating audiences with her vivacious personality. However, she harbored a special admiration for actors Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra. In fact, when Divya first met Amitabh Bachchan, she was so thrilled that she refused to wash her hands for ten days after their handshake. This encounter occurred during a rally where her father was present, marking her first meeting with a superstar. Unfortunately, she had to wash her hands after a while, despite her initial resolve.
Throughout her school years, Divya had a crush on every hero, but Jeetendra held a unique place in her heart. She revealed in an interview that she always dreamed of romancing him on screen. However, by the time she entered the film industry, Jeetendra had begun taking on father roles, leaving her dream unfulfilled.
Divya had a passion for cinema from a young age. She wasn’t particularly strong in academics and decided to pursue acting as a way to escape her studies. According to her, shooting was far easier than studying, making acting the perfect alternative.
She made her debut in the Tamil film “Nilli Panne” in 1990 before entering Bollywood with “Vishwatma.” However, it was the film “Deewana,” starring Rishi Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan, that catapulted her to fame. Before her tragic death in 1993, Divya had several films lined up, including “Laadla,” “Mohra,” “Vijaypath,” “Kanyadaan,” and “Andolan.” After her passing, various actresses stepped into her roles in these films, which went on to become major hits.
