Disney+ and Hulu Announce Reboot of ‘Glee’
Disney+ and Hulu have confirmed a reboot of 'Glee', with original creators involved and the possibility of original cast members returning.
Disney+ and Hulu have officially announced a reboot of the musical dramedy series ‘Glee’, originally created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan. The original series aired on Fox from 2009 to 2015, encompassing six seasons and addressing various societal issues through its engaging storylines and musical performances.
‘Glee’ followed the lives of show choir members from Lima, Ohio, and became known for its covers of popular songs, tackling themes such as sexuality, race, and mental health. The show remains popular, with its music averaging 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
Murphy confirmed he has written a script for the reboot and has spoken with about ten original cast members, who he said are enthusiastic about the project. “It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
Among the original cast were Lea Michele, who portrayed Rachel Berry, and Jane Lynch, known for her role as Sue Sylvester, the antagonistic cheerleading coach. Michele expressed her desire to return, stating, “I love ‘Glee.’ I will always love ‘Glee.’ I love Ryan Murphy.” Lynch shared similar sentiments, highlighting her willingness to be involved in the reboot.
Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, raised concerns about the reboot following the death of Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez. “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya is gone,” he said. Rivera tragically drowned in 2020 while trying to save her son, marking a profound loss for the cast and fans alike. Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died in 2013, and Mark Salling took his own life in 2018.
While plans for casting have not yet been disclosed, the involvement of original creators and the enthusiasm from past cast members signal a strong potential for the project. The reboot has generated significant interest as fans eagerly await more details.
