Discrepancies in South Koreas Local Election Voter Data Raise Concerns, Investigation Underway

Seoul, August 10: Local elections in South Korea were held in June 2026. Following the elections, discrepancies in voter data sparked significant controversy. New irregularities have emerged, raising fresh questions about the transparency of the electoral process in the country. According to the National Election Commission (NEC), there are notable differences between the number of registered voters at the end of voting and the final figures released at several polling stations.

A report by the Yonhap News Agency on Monday highlighted that voting took place in 3,558 polling areas during the elections on June 3. Of these, 1,971 areas showed discrepancies between the recorded numbers at the close of voting and the final tallies. In approximately 29 polling areas, the difference was 100 voters or more.

Some cases revealed even larger discrepancies. At a polling station in Ansan, located south of Seoul, 2,105 voters were recorded at 6 PM when voting ended, but the final count was later reported as 1,494. Conversely, a polling station in Busan reported 7,137 voters at the same time, with the final count rising to 7,922.

In light of these findings, investigative agencies are working to determine the reasons behind such discrepancies. This issue is particularly sensitive as there are ongoing investigations into alleged irregularities in South Korea’s electoral process.

A joint prosecution-police investigation team is also looking into issues related to a shortage of ballots on election day. During the investigation, allegations surfaced that some officials from the election commission altered hourly data related to voter turnout.

However, the National Election Commission has defended itself against these allegations, stating that the hourly figures released during voting are preliminary. The differences in final numbers can occur due to verification and other procedures after voting concludes.

Thus, the discrepancies in data cannot currently be taken as evidence of electoral misconduct. The key question remains whether these changes were due to standard administrative processes or intentional interference at some level. The situation will become clearer once the investigation is complete.
