Discovering the Mystical Jankar Sam Temple in Uttarakhand

Explore the Jankar Sam Temple in Almora, Uttarakhand, a revered site dedicated to the deity Sam, known for fulfilling devotees wishes.

Almora, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : Nestled in the lush hills of Uttarakhand, the Jankar Sam Temple, also known as Samjyu, stands as a significant spiritual site. This temple is believed to honor Sam, the guru of all deities, who is said to fulfill the wishes of his devotees and provide protection.

The name “Sam” translates to “self-born,” reflecting his status as a just and benevolent deity who safeguards his followers and vanquishes evil.

Recently, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the temple’s grandeur, urging visitors to experience its spiritual essence. In a video posted on social media platform X, he stated, “The Jankar Sam Temple in Almora district is a crucial center of faith and mythology. It is believed that Lord Shiva meditated at this sacred site. The temple, filled with natural beauty and spiritual energy, attracts devotees year-round. Be sure to visit this holy place when in Almora.”

Located about 40 kilometers from Almora and just 4 kilometers from Jageshwar Dham, the temple is nestled in the dense cedar forests of Daruk Van. It is dedicated to Sam, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and is steeped in mythological tales. One such story involves a miraculous cedar tree that is said to bear the likeness of Lord Ganesha and has a history of producing milk.

Local traditions dictate that during any ritual or community feast in the village, the first offering is made to Sam, underscoring his revered status.

In the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Sam is worshipped as a prominent local deity and an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Folklore suggests that his origins trace back to the Doti region of Nepal. Numerous miraculous tales, including the cedar tree’s milk production and his ability to alleviate devotees’ suffering, continue to be part of the local lore.
