Kolkata, August 9: West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh has responded to the recent death of a TMC leader in police custody. He stated that any death occurring in police custody is unacceptable and emphasized the need for a formal investigation.
Ghosh remarked, “If someone dies in police custody, it is wrong, and an FIR should be registered in such cases.” He further criticized the TMC leaders for allegedly blaming the police or others when they are responsible for violent acts.
Regarding TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee’s appeal to the Supreme Court for permission to travel abroad for eye surgery, Ghosh said, “If a doctor has genuinely advised that he needs to go abroad for treatment not available in India, he should go. However, the court will consider all aspects before making a decision, especially given the complaints against him.”
On the CID’s questioning of Banerjee’s associate, Sumit Roy, Ghosh noted, “There are several complaints against Abhishek Banerjee’s PA. The CBI is investigating this matter, which is why he was summoned for questioning. He has been avoiding it for a long time but is still seen coming and going in the party vehicle. The results will be revealed once the investigation is complete.”
Ghosh also commented on Mahua Moitra’s withdrawal of her petition, stating, “This is absolutely correct. In a democracy, people certainly have the right to speak and ask questions, but they also have responsibilities towards society and the nation. It is not just about exercising rights. Some are being taught that they can say anything against the country, but that is unacceptable. It is not right to approach the Supreme Court for every issue.”
On the process of renaming Aligarh, Ghosh said, “Many names have already been changed across the country, and more changes are likely. Several names were altered during the Mughal and British eras, reflecting changes in our culture and heritage. Place names should represent our culture, and local municipalities and district councils will decide based on public sentiment.”
Addressing concerns over U.S. tariffs on Russian oil, he stated, “If India buys oil from Russia, what does Trump have to do with it? He often changes his stance. There should be no undue interference in this matter. It is a commercial transaction between two countries. European nations also purchase oil from Russia without any issues. Our Ministry of External Affairs and Foreign Minister are equipped to handle such matters.”
