Ujjain, March 23: A massive crowd of devotees gathered at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month. The temple, dedicated to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.”
Devotees began lining up late Sunday night, eager to glimpse the deity. As per tradition, the temple gates opened at 4 AM on Monday to awaken Baba Mahakal. Many devotees participated in the Bhasma Aarti, witnessing the sacred rituals early in the morning.
This Aarti is considered the most special and holy tradition of the Mahakal Temple. Devotees observed the rituals with great reverence as the Aarti was conducted by the Mahanirvani Akhara. During this ceremony, Baba manifests from his formless state to reveal his divine form to his followers.
The temple gates opened between 3:30 and 4:00 AM, marking the start of the worship in the sanctum sanctorum. Following this, an Abhishek was performed with Panchamrit, a mixture of pure milk, fresh yogurt, ghee, sugar, honey, and various fruit juices. The grand Bhasma Aarti followed, where sacred ash was offered to Baba, and the Aarti was performed.
Afterward, Baba was adorned with beautiful decorations, including sandalwood and a crescent moon on his forehead, along with a new crown and a garland of flowers. Devotees were overjoyed to witness Baba’s magnificent adornment. The Kapoor Aarti was conducted next, followed by the offering of bhog. Each day, Baba is adorned in a unique manner.
On this auspicious occasion, the assembled devotees experienced this extraordinary moment with deep devotion. The entire temple complex was filled with joyous chants, creating a divine atmosphere. The Aarti lasted nearly two hours, accompanied by Vedic chants and the adornment of the deity.
