Devotees Flock to Mahakal Temple for Chaitra Navami Celebration

Ujjain, March 27: On the auspicious occasion of Chaitra Shukla Paksha’s Navami, a massive crowd of devotees gathered at the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain from early morning. During the world-famous Bhasma Aarti, devotees flocked to witness the divine presence of Baba Mahakal. The temple resonated with chants of “Jai Shri Mahakal.”

Devotees had queued up since late last night to seek the blessings of their beloved deity. As usual, the temple doors were opened in the morning, and after the Bhasma Aarti, a special adornment of Mahakal was performed.

The temple doors were first opened at dawn upon the command of Lord Veerbhadra. The Mahanirvani Akhada performed the initial water abhishek, followed by a ceremonial bath with Panchamrit, a mixture of pure milk, fresh yogurt, ghee, sugar, honey, and various fruit juices. After the abhishek, a grand Bhasma Aarti took place, where sacred ash was offered to Baba, allowing devotees to experience his divine form.

Due to Ram Navami, the adornment of Baba was particularly special. A beautiful silver tripund was placed on his forehead, inscribed with the name of Ram, capturing everyone’s attention. Baba was decorated with garlands of flowers, bel leaves, sandalwood, and other offerings. Following this, the Kapoor Aarti was performed, and bhog was offered to Mahakal.

Devotees reveled in the sacred Aarti, enjoying the divine form of Baba Mahakal. The atmosphere was filled with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Mahakal,” creating a deeply devotional ambiance throughout the temple complex.

This Aarti symbolizes renunciation and the truth of mortality. The ash offered to Baba is specially prepared from the ashes of cow dung, Palash, Banyan, Peepal, and Ber wood. During the Aarti, approximately two and a half kilograms of ash is offered to awaken Baba Mahakal, honoring a long-standing tradition.

During the Bhasma Aarti, women traditionally wear veils, while men don dhotis.
