Demand to Include Shibu Sorens Struggles in Curriculum Grows Stronger

Dhanbad, August 4: On the first death anniversary of Shibu Soren, a prominent leader of the Jharkhand movement and founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a tribute gathering was held at Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad under the banner of the Jharkhand Movement Struggle Front.

The event saw participation from various social and political organizations, including CPI(ML) MLA Arup Chatterjee from Nirsa and MLA Chandradev Mahto from Sindri, who paid their respects by offering flowers at Guruji’s portrait. Speakers at the gathering recalled Shibu Soren’s leadership in the Jharkhand movement and his significant contributions to the formation of the state, emphasizing that his struggle serves as an inspiration for the younger generation.

Activists called for the inclusion of Guruji’s life, the Jharkhand movement, and his role in state formation in the school curriculum, so that the new generation can connect with their history and the struggles of their people. MLA Arup Chatterjee stated that the vision of Jharkhand that Guruji dreamed of has not yet been fully realized. He highlighted that the purpose of state formation was to provide local youth with dignified employment and rights, yet a significant number of young people still face unemployment.

He accused the Jharkhand Public Service Commission of favoring outsiders in job recruitment processes, which contradicts the core spirit of the state movement. He asserted that the first claim to Jharkhand’s resources and government jobs should belong to the state’s youth, urging the government to take concrete steps in this direction.

Chatterjee emphasized that Guruji fought for the protection of water, forests, land, and Jharkhand’s identity throughout his life. He argued that Guruji’s thoughts and struggles should not be confined to memorial events but should also be integrated into government policies and the education system. Other speakers at the gathering echoed the need to remember Guruji’s struggles and reaffirmed their commitment to following his path, stressing the importance of preserving the history of the Jharkhand movement.
