Demand for Eco-Friendly Idols Surges in Prayagraj Ahead of Diwali

As Diwali approaches, artisans in Prayagraj are working long hours to meet the rising demand for eco-friendly idols.

Prayagraj, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Artisans in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, are busy crafting eco-friendly idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kuber as Diwali approaches. These idols are made from natural clay and water-soluble colors, ensuring they are environmentally safe.

Anamika, a female sculptor, shared that she begins production in January each year. She mentioned that a variety of idols, including those of Ganesha, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Hanuman, are created in different sizes. Each deity has four to five distinct designs available.

With the festival nearing, the pressure to meet demand intensifies. Anamika explained that not only family members but also external artisans are invited to help. They often work for 12 to 13 hours a day as the holiday approaches. The demand is so high that they struggle to keep up, sometimes having to turn customers away due to raw material shortages.

When asked about the use of harmful chemicals, Anamika assured that no harmful substances are used in their idols. The colors are mixed with a natural adhesive, making them safe for the environment.

Another sculptor, Rannu, added that idols of various deities, including Durga, Kali, and Bajrangbali, are also produced for the festival. She noted that their idols are in high demand, with many traders purchasing them for resale in distant markets. Each idol is hand-decorated, giving it a unique charm.

As the festival draws closer, the artisans remain committed to delivering beautiful, safe idols that celebrate the spirit of Diwali while protecting the environment.
