Delhis Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Commits to Traffic-Free Roads from Mayur Vihar to AIIMS

New Delhi, March 16: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the Delhi government has taken significant steps to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate smoother movement in the capital.

The government has approved two major projects aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The Cabinet has greenlit the Barapullah Phase-III Elevated Corridor and a six-lane elevated corridor with an underpass on MB Road. The Chief Minister stated that these initiatives will provide relief to millions and modernize Delhi’s road system. These projects are crucial steps towards building a ‘developed Delhi’ and will contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘developed India.’

During a Cabinet meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat on Monday, both projects received approval. The Chief Minister announced that the revised cost for the construction of the elevated road over the Barapullah drain, from Sarai Kale Khan to Mayur Vihar, is set at ₹1,635.03 crores. This project will extend the existing Barapullah Elevated Corridor, allowing for uninterrupted connectivity from Mayur Vihar in East Delhi to AIIMS in South Delhi.

She emphasized that this development will significantly reduce travel time for millions commuting between East and South Delhi and alleviate traffic congestion around Sarai Kale Khan, Ring Road, DND Flyway, and NH-24. The construction is expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also addressed delays caused by the previous government regarding this project. She confirmed that the matter has been referred to the Anti-Corruption Branch for a detailed investigation to determine the reasons behind the delays and identify those responsible. The current government is committed to advancing the project with clear financial arrangements and accountability.

Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the construction of a six-lane elevated road and underpass from Saket G-Block to Pul Prahladpur on MB Road, with an estimated cost of ₹1,471.14 crores. This project will be executed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

The initiative will be implemented in two phases. The first phase includes the construction of a double-decker integrated structure from Saket G-Block to Sangam Vihar, featuring a six-lane elevated flyover, a six-lane underpass at Saket G-Block, an elevated ramp connecting the BRT corridor to the flyover, and a two-lane underpass linking MB Road to the BRT corridor. The second phase will involve constructing a 2.48-kilometer-long six-lane elevated flyover from Maa Anandmayi Marg to Pul Prahladpur, which will be built above the Delhi Metro tunnel.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta remarked that MB Road is one of the busiest roads in South Delhi, plagued by long-standing traffic issues. Once completed, this project will ease traffic between Saket, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur, Sangam Vihar, and Pul Prahladpur, significantly reducing congestion and travel times.

She also mentioned that the Cabinet has instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) to finalize the alignment of the remaining sections of MB Road, which includes the stretch from Sangam Vihar to Maa Anandmayi Marg and from Pul Prahladpur to Badarpur. This will enhance traffic management across the entire MB Road from Saket G-Block to Badarpur.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta reiterated that the Delhi government is continuously working to equip the capital with modern, efficient, and world-class infrastructure. She stated that in alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘developed India,’ Delhi is developing a modern road network, improved connectivity, and robust infrastructure. These projects represent tangible steps towards a ‘developed Delhi,’ making the capital’s traffic system more efficient and convenient for citizens.

She concluded by emphasizing her government’s goal of rapidly, transparently, and accountably developing infrastructure in Delhi. Unlike the previous government, which saw projects stalled for extended periods causing public inconvenience, the current administration is dedicated to completing work on time to improve the capital’s traffic management.
