Major Drug Bust in Amravati: Mumbai Drug Mafia Arrested with MD Drugs Worth Over ₹12 Lakh

Mumbai, March 22: In a significant operation against drug trafficking, the Amravati Crime Branch has apprehended a major drug mafia from Mumbai. Approximately 78 grams of methamphetamine (MD) have been seized, with an estimated market value exceeding ₹12 lakh. Three mobile phones were also recovered during the operation.

Acting on confidential information, the Amravati Crime Branch set up a sting operation in the Lalkhadi area of the city. Reports indicated that a large quantity of MD drugs was being transported from Mumbai to Amravati for sale. The operation led to the arrest of 36-year-old Azeem Asad Sheikh from Mahim West, Mumbai, and 25-year-old Sheikh Sameer Sheikh Amir from Gavli Pura, Amravati, both found in possession of the 78 grams of MD. The duo has been remanded to police custody by the Amravati court.

Initial investigations reveal that the suspects had arrived in Amravati with a shipment of MD drugs, intending to establish a local sales network. Authorities suspect that this racket may have connections not only to Mumbai but also to other districts in the Vidarbha region. The investigation is now shifting focus towards Mumbai and its surrounding areas, with the potential for uncovering additional members of this network and its supply chain.

This operation was executed under the directives of Police Commissioner Rakesh Ola, with Deputy Commissioner Ganesh Shinde and Crime Branch Inspector Sandeep Chavan leading the team. The Amravati police have intensified their efforts to eradicate drug trafficking and sales in the city. Recent months have seen several large seizures, causing significant disruption among drug traffickers.

MD (methamphetamine) is a synthetic drug that is rapidly gaining popularity among youth due to its low cost, making it accessible to school and college students. The police have issued a warning that strict action will continue against anyone involved in drug-related activities or networks. Investigations into the suspects’ mobile phones are expected to yield crucial leads.

This action is part of Amravati’s zero-tolerance policy against drugs. The police have urged the public to report any information regarding drug trafficking or sales immediately. The Crime Branch team is now working to reach out to contacts and suppliers in Mumbai. This success marks a significant blow to the drug network in Vidarbha, with expectations of further major revelations to come.
