(Udaipur Kiran) — New Delhi, India’s capital, has recorded the fastest median mobile download speeds in the country, according to data released by Ookla, the global network intelligence and speed testing firm.
The report highlights that Delhi achieved a median download speed of 168.14 Mbps, the highest in India, reflecting the strong digital infrastructure and widespread 5G deployment across the city. Nationwide, the median download speed across most Indian states and union territories stands at around 40 Mbps.
Ookla attributed this improvement to the ongoing rollout of 5G networks, which has significantly boosted mobile internet speeds across both urban and semi-urban regions. However, the company noted a stark contrast in mobile penetration rates, with urban India at 125.3% compared to 58.8% in rural areas, indicating that connectivity gaps still persist.
The report also pointed out major improvements in regions that previously had slower networks. For instance, Lakshadweep’s lower 10th percentile speed jumped more than thirteen-fold, from 0.68 Mbps in early 2024 to 8.99 Mbps in early 2025, signaling a clear improvement in network reach and reliability.
In Ookla’s Global Speed Index Report, India recorded a median download speed of 131.77 Mbps in August 2025, placing the country 25th globally among nations with the fastest mobile networks. The rise has been credited largely to 5G adoption, as operators continue to expand coverage nationwide.
Meanwhile, BSNL and private telecom operators are working to extend 4G and 5G coverage deeper into rural India, aiming to narrow the digital divide and ensure equitable access to high-speed connectivity.
With 5G expansion continuing rapidly, India’s mobile internet performance is expected to improve further in the coming months, setting new benchmarks for global connectivity standards.
