New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, several Delhi police constables have come forward to share their experiences of violence during a recent protest by Congress supporters. This incident occurred amid the ongoing demonstrations against the Election Commission‘s “Special Intensive Review” (SIR) on October 7.
The constables, including female officers, described being physically assaulted by a chaotic crowd. Constable Deepender Sandhu recounted the moment when protesters targeted them while they were enforcing Section 163, which prohibits demonstrations in the area. He stated, “They deliberately aimed for us, pulling us from behind and knocking us to the ground. They began to kick and punch us. We managed to escape somehow.”
Sandhu also noted that after the assault, he witnessed one of his attackers fleeing the scene. “The person who pulled me from behind and kicked me was wearing white clothes,” he added.
Head Constable Bhupender Ahlawat shared a similar account, emphasizing that despite being in uniform, he was also attacked. He described the assault as premeditated, indicating that fellow protesters provided cover for the assailants to escape. “I was kicked deliberately. They grabbed my waist from behind and brought me down. When I turned to see who it was, Congress supporters concealed the attacker, leading him to a green area in the roundabout to hide him,” Ahlawat explained.
Another officer, a female constable named Seema, reported being assaulted during the protests near the Akashvani Bhavan while detaining legislators. “Following orders from our superiors is our duty. At that moment, we don’t focus on our injuries. I later found out that I had been hurt. These were the same legislators who were sitting with Priyanka Gandhi,” she said.
In light of these events, reports indicate that the Delhi police have filed multiple FIRs against opposition activists for abuse, pushing, and assault against their personnel. This violence unfolded as police officers attempted to maintain order while adhering to safety protocols in challenging circumstances.
