Chennai Super Kings Part Ways with Batting Coach Michael Hussey Ahead of IPL 2027 Auction
Chennai Super Kings announce the departure of batting coach Michael Hussey before the IPL 2027 auction, marking a new chapter for the franchise.

New Delhi, October 27 (Daily Kiran) : The Chennai Super Kings (CSK), five-time champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL), have announced their split from batting coach Michael Hussey ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
Hussey joined CSK as a batting coach after retiring from professional cricket. The franchise confirmed his departure on social media, expressing gratitude for his contributions since the league’s inception in 2008. The message highlighted Hussey’s dedication and humility, stating, “You have been an integral part of the CSK family since the first season in 2008. Your journey in the yellow jersey will be remembered not just for the runs you scored or the players you nurtured, but also for your unwavering commitment over the years. Your place in our history will always be special, ‘Mr. Cricket’. Once a Super King, always a Super King.”
Following three consecutive seasons without playoff appearances in 2024, 2025, and 2026, CSK is undergoing significant changes within its coaching staff. Hussey’s exit is part of this restructuring process.
Former fast bowler Zaheer Khan has taken over as head coach, replacing Stephen Fleming. Meanwhile, Mohit Sharma, another former CSK fast bowler, is now the bowling coach, succeeding Eric Simons. Simons and former fielding coach James Foster have joined the England Test team, where Fleming has also moved on after an 18-year tenure with CSK.
While CSK has not yet announced Hussey’s successor, Gareth Batty, a former England off-spinner and current head coach of Surrey, will join the coaching team as an assistant.
During his playing career, Hussey scored a total of 1,768 runs for CSK over six seasons. He initially joined the team in 2008, missed the 2009 season, and played continuously from 2010 to 2013. After a year with the Mumbai Indians in 2014, he returned to CSK in 2015 and took on the batting coach role in 2018, contributing to the team’s championship victories in 2018, 2021, and 2023.
It remains to be seen whether Hussey will join another IPL team’s coaching staff, especially since the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings have open positions in their coaching teams.
