Delhi Police Launches Investigation into Violence During CJP Protest

New Delhi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has initiated an investigation into the violence that erupted during a protest by the Cockroach People’s Party (CJP) in July. Authorities have registered a case under relevant laws following this incident.

Investigators are particularly focused on determining the roles of individuals involved in the violence that occurred on July 20 in New Delhi. They are examining whether the unrest was premeditated or if criminal elements infiltrated the protest as CJP called for a march towards Parliament.

In response to directives from the Supreme Court, Delhi Police had already dismissed 17 FIRs related to the violence. The Crime Branch is now specifically looking into incidents involving attacks on police personnel, vandalism, and damage to public property.

On July 20, a significant number of demonstrators gathered at Jantar Mantar and its surroundings, with approximately 30,000 people taking to the streets. They demanded action against issues like paper leaks and other irregularities related to examinations while attempting to march towards Parliament.

Tensions escalated, leading to clashes between the police and protesters. The police faced widespread criticism for their use of force during these confrontations.

Following the incident, a review of Delhi Police’s intelligence operations was conducted. Officials acknowledged that there was a lack of sufficient and accurate information regarding the number of protesters, their organization, and the involvement of various groups.

Consequently, the Special Branch of Delhi Police was instructed to gather more detailed and actionable intelligence, moving beyond just the location of the protest and estimated crowd size. However, in September, the Supreme Court annulled FIRs against student protesters filed between July 20 and 25 in Delhi, Bihar, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Assam, directing that no further action or investigation should proceed in similar cases nationwide.
