Delhi High Court Reserves Decision on Vikas Yadav’s Parole Plea in Nitish Katara Case

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has reserved its verdict on the three-week parole plea of Vikas Yadav in the Nitish Katara murder case. During the hearing, Justice Ravindra Doudesja’s bench heard arguments from all parties before deciding to keep the judgment pending. Vikas Yadav is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence related to the case.

During the court proceedings, the lawyer representing Nitish Katara’s family opposed Vikas Yadav’s parole request, expressing concerns that releasing him on parole could jeopardise the safety of witnesses.

The murder of Nitish Katara occurred in February 2002, and the case is linked to an honour killing. Nitish Katara had a friendship with the daughter of leader D.P. Yadav, which led to his abduction and subsequent murder. The charges were brought against Vikas and Vishal, brothers of Nitish’s friend Bharti. Vikas Yadav is the son of D.P. Yadav. The trial court had classified the murder as an honour killing and sentenced both Vikas and Vishal to life imprisonment on 30 May 2008.

However, the Delhi High Court later reduced Vikas Yadav’s life sentence to 25 years. The Supreme Court upheld the 25-year imprisonment for both Vikas and Vishal Yadav in October 2016.

Vikas Yadav has served 23 of the 25 years of his sentence so far.
