Palamu, August 4 (H.S.) — In a shocking case of honour killing, a young couple in love was brutally murdered in Taria village under Tarhasi police station limits in Palamu district. Within hours of the crime coming to light, the police arrested five family members of the girl — including her father, mother, and three uncles. All five were sent to judicial custody on Monday afternoon.

Palamu Superintendent of Police Reshma Ramesan confirmed the arrests and the nature of the incident. The victims were identified as Subhash Kumar alias Karu Singh (22), son of Virendra Singh from Bhundra, and Vibha Kumari (21), daughter of Upendra Singh from Poorni Taria. Subhash worked as a tractor driver and had been missing since Friday, August 1. The bodies were discovered on Sunday evening.

Based on a complaint filed by Subhash’s brother, Jayprakash Kumar, police launched an investigation which quickly led to the breakthrough. Those arrested include Vibha’s father Upendra Mahato, mother Kalawati Devi, and uncles Janeshwar Mahato, Vimlesh Mahato alias Rajesh Mahato, and another family member.

According to Manoj Jha, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Lesliganj, Subhash and Vibha had been in a romantic relationship for some time. Despite the girl’s family trying to dissuade them about a month and a half ago, the two continued to see each other.

On the night of August 1, the girl was reportedly pressured to lure Subhash to her home. Once there, Vibha’s father and uncles attacked him with iron rods and lathis, killing him on the spot. Subsequently, Vibha too was murdered. In an attempt to destroy evidence, both bodies were dumped into a well belonging to Bipin Mahato.

This incident has shocked the local community and sparked discussions about the ongoing issue of honour killings in rural India.
