New Delhi, August 8: The Delhi Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, approved the ‘Delhi Private Universities Bill, 2026’ on Friday. This move is expected to enhance investment in higher education and improve collaboration with the industry.
Officials indicated that following the Cabinet’s approval, the bill is likely to be presented in the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly. They noted that while many other states already have such laws, the Delhi government is now paving the way for private universities by establishing a legal framework through this bill.
Currently, private universities in the capital operate as ‘deemed universities’ or as private colleges affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. Officials believe that the proposed legislation will benefit self-financing colleges, many of which have already received autonomous status, granting them the freedom to set their own curriculum.
Earlier in the day, the monsoon session of the Delhi Assembly commenced. The agenda included presenting two reports from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India and a notification related to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee also decided that three bills would be introduced during the eighth Assembly’s sixth session from August 7 to 11. These bills will pertain to the timely delivery of public services, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board, and ‘Bed-and-Breakfast’ establishments.
On Friday, Speaker Vijender Gupta instructed Delhi government departments to pay attention to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) comments on last year’s CAG report and submit ‘Action Taken Notes’ within the stipulated time.
On the first day of the sixth session of the eighth Delhi Assembly, Speaker Gupta stated, “Since last year, the PAC has been continuously reviewing those CAG reports that were not presented before the House during previous administrations.”
He added, “The committee has now submitted its report on the CAG reports presented last year. I am confident that the review of this year’s CAG reports will also be completed by the end of the year. I have directed the Assembly Secretariat to send these reports to the relevant departments to ensure that ‘Action Taken Notes’ are received as soon as possible.”
