New Delhi: Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijendra Gupta expressed serious concerns on Friday regarding the conduct of the Punjab government in connection with the controversy surrounding Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi’s remarks about Sikh Gurus.
Gupta condemned the delay in sharing the First Information Report (FIR) and forensic report related to the allegedly doctored video of Atishi’s remarks. He described the situation as a possible conspiracy, noting that Atishi’s controversial remarks were made on January 6 in the Delhi Assembly. However, the FIR and complaint regarding the altered video were filed in Punjab without the consent of the Delhi Assembly.
Despite repeated reminders from the Delhi Assembly, the Punjab government has continuously withheld files related to the matter, raising serious questions. Gupta pointed out that till date, neither a copy of the FIR nor the complaint has been shared, nor has any official investigation report been made public. This lack of transparency has led to suspicion.
The Assembly Speaker stated that the silence and repeated delays appear to be a deliberate attempt to hide facts. He added that the issue seems directly linked to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Emphasising the importance of accountability in a democracy, Gupta said no government has the right to avoid it.
He clarified that the Delhi Assembly will not take the matter lightly under any circumstances. The issue transcends administrative or political boundaries as it concerns respect, dignity, and faith related to Sikh Gurus. Any negligence or insensitivity in such a sensitive matter is completely unacceptable.
Gupta also criticised the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in Punjab for spreading falsehoods and creating unnecessary turmoil following the alleged insult to the Gurus. He said the Delhi Assembly will not tolerate such behaviour.
The Speaker stressed that it is their responsibility to bring the truth to light and ensure punishment for the guilty. The Delhi Assembly will firmly pursue the issue and take all necessary steps to secure justice. He further stated that the use of Assembly footage by the Punjab government for forensic examination without permission was “illegal.”
Gupta emphasised that Assembly footage is the property of the House, and obtaining it through unauthorised means for investigating the Atishi controversy amounts to serious negligence.
Earlier, the Delhi Assembly Speaker had taken the position that forensic testing of any footage related to the House by the Punjab government was inappropriate, especially since the Delhi authorities themselves had ordered a forensic examination of the Assembly’s video recordings.
