Islamabad, August 3: The death toll from the suicide attack on the Kabal police station has risen to 17. Two more injured police officers succumbed to their injuries on Monday, according to local media reports.
The explosion occurred on Sunday at the police station located in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Pakistani news channel Samaa TV reported that the fatalities now include seven police officers and ten civilians. Meanwhile, 13 injured police personnel are still receiving treatment.
The suicide bomber detonated the explosives near the main entrance of the police station, where hundreds of people were gathered for a protest at Kabal Chowk, as reported by the prominent daily Dawn.
District Police Officer (DPO) Umar Khan stated that the suicide attacker detonated himself as a police officer attempted to stop him. Following the attack, security forces cordoned off the area and initiated an investigation.
This suicide attack is part of a series of assaults targeting police and security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier this week, armed assailants attacked the Khajina Banda check post in Hangu district, resulting in the deaths of at least nine police officers and injuries to 28 others.
On July 22, unidentified attackers shot and killed a police officer in a separate incident in the Sarwekai area of Upper South Waziristan district. Local media reported that the constable was ambushed while on his way to duty and died at the scene.
