Birmingham, June 13: England triumphed over Sri Lanka by 87 runs in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The star of the match was Dan Wyatt-Hodge, who scored an unbeaten 105 runs off 62 balls. After the game, Wyatt revealed that her newborn daughter, Daisy, was her biggest inspiration for this remarkable century.
Thanks to Wyatt’s exceptional batting, England set a massive total of 219/1 in their allotted 20 overs, marking the highest score in the tournament’s history. In response, Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 132 runs. Wyatt shared that while she was nearing 90 runs, thoughts of her daughter Daisy motivated her to push for the century. “I felt I was close to a hundred and thought I could achieve this milestone for Daisy. That thought kept me going,” she said.
At 35 years old, this was Wyatt’s third century in T20 internationals. She became the second English player to score a century in the Women’s T20 World Cup, following Heather Knight, who accomplished this feat against Thailand in 2020.
Reflecting on her century, Wyatt noted that she capitalized on the bowler’s strategy in the final overs. The bowler was delivering slow and wide balls, prompting Wyatt to aim for gaps in the field. When the ball crossed the boundary for a four, she realized she had completed her century. After reaching the milestone, Wyatt gestured to lift her daughter Daisy while embracing Nat Sciver-Brunt.
“I have been waiting for my third T20 international century for many years. Achieving this in front of my family and loved ones was incredibly special. When I saw the ball go for four, I was overjoyed,” Wyatt expressed. She also acknowledged that becoming a mother has transformed her life. Although she has been away from Daisy since joining the team, she looks forward to reuniting with her soon in Southampton. Wyatt mentioned that the arrival of her daughter has given her a new perspective on life, and most of her thoughts now revolve around Daisy.
“It feels like I haven’t seen Daisy in a long time. I am eagerly waiting to meet her. I wanted to score at least a half-century for her, but getting a century made it even more special. I dedicate this achievement to my family and my daughter,” she concluded. Following their victory over Sri Lanka, England will face Ireland in their next match on June 16.
