Damian Martyn’s Recovery Called “Almost a Miracle” by Mark Waugh

New Delhi: Former Australian cricket star Damian Martyn was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after recovering from an induced coma. He had been admitted a week earlier, and his recovery has been confirmed by former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist and ex-batsman Mark Waugh.

Mark Waugh, speaking on Fox Cricket, said, “He still has some way to go. It was very difficult, but this is very good news. It truly feels like a miracle. When he was in the ICU, his condition looked very serious.”

Adam Gilchrist expressed on Kayo Sports during the Sydney Test, “It’s great to hear that he is back home. His family extends heartfelt thanks and gratitude for all the support they have received.”

Damian Martyn fell ill on Boxing Day and was admitted to a hospital on the Gold Coast. He was placed in an induced coma due to meningitis. Last week, he regained consciousness and was discharged once his condition stabilised.

Martyn is remembered as one of Australia’s finest batsmen, playing a key role in Australia’s 2003 World Cup victory. In the final against India, he scored an unbeaten 88 runs and shared a crucial 234-run partnership with captain Ricky Ponting. He was also part of Australia’s victorious squads in the 1999 World Cup and the 2006 Champions Trophy.

Between 1992 and 2006, Martyn featured in 67 Test matches, scoring 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, including 13 centuries and 23 half-centuries. In One Day Internationals, he played 208 matches, amassing 5,346 runs with 5 centuries and 37 fifties. He also played 4 T20 matches, scoring 120 runs with one half-century. Martyn retired from international cricket in 2006.
