Beijing, April 22: During a discussion on the Ukraine issue at the United Nations Security Council, China’s permanent deputy representative, Sun Lei, emphasized the need for all parties to prioritize peace. He urged maximum restraint to stabilize the situation and ensure a swift ceasefire.
Sun Lei noted that the Ukraine crisis has persisted for a long time. The international community collectively hopes for an end to the conflict and a political resolution as soon as possible. He called for ongoing dialogue among all parties to reach a consensus.
He stated that all relevant parties should engage in the negotiation process, maintain communication, and work towards a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace agreement under the principles of the UN Charter.
Expressing concern over civilian casualties and attacks on infrastructure, he urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, ensure the safety of civilians, and take concrete steps to alleviate their suffering.
Sun Lei reiterated that China’s stance on the Ukraine issue has remained consistent, based on ‘four principles.’ He affirmed China’s commitment to a neutral and fair approach, promoting a halt to hostilities and encouraging dialogue.
He rejected the United States’ longstanding and unfounded accusations, stating that China is neither the creator of this crisis nor a party to it. He highlighted that during the crisis, China has neither remained silent nor attempted to escalate the situation. Instead, China has actively worked towards promoting a ceasefire and dialogue.
Furthermore, he mentioned that China’s fair position and constructive role have gained broad acceptance within the international community. Any attempts to accuse or attack China regarding the Ukraine issue are irresponsible and will not succeed.
