Toronto, June 24: Croatia delivered a strong performance in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match, defeating Panama 1-0. This victory at Toronto Stadium secured three crucial points for Croatia.
With this loss, Panama’s hopes of advancing to the next round have been dashed. Croatia achieved this significant win in the 200th match of their star player, Luka Modric. Modric has been a part of Croatia’s last 21 World Cup matches, a streak that began in 2006 against Japan, contributing to the team’s efforts in every game since.
In the first half at Toronto Stadium, Panama showcased better gameplay compared to Croatia. They had a golden opportunity to score in the 23rd minute when Jose Luis Rodriguez made a powerful header. However, Croatia’s goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, made an incredible save, tipping the ball onto the crossbar and preventing a goal.
After halftime, Croatia tightened its grip on the match. In the 54th minute, they took a 1-0 lead. A brilliant low cross from Josip Stanisic was converted into a goal by substitute Ante Budimir.
Just three minutes later, Marco Pasalic had a chance to double the lead, but Panama’s goalkeeper, Orlando Mosquera, denied him. Following the rebound, Pasalic missed the opportunity to score. Panama created a few chances but failed to find the net, thanks to Livakovic’s outstanding form, as he made several key saves. Consequently, Panama was unable to secure the crucial goal needed to earn their first point in the World Cup.
For Luka Modric, this match was a memorable one as Croatia kept their hopes alive for advancing to the Round of 32 with this win.
