Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Insult to Lord Ram in Bangladesh

Dhaka, June 15: A significant controversy has emerged in the Palashbari sub-district of Gaibandha, Bangladesh, regarding an alleged insult to an image of Lord Ram at the Radha-Govind temple. The incident has sparked outrage from the country’s leading minority rights organization, the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, which condemned the act as an affront to the religious sentiments of the Hindu community.

According to the organization, the image of Lord Ram was disrespected during a procession led by a communal group. The council accused, “For several days, some extremist elements have threatened to damage the idol of Lord Shri Ram and the temple premises in Palashbari.”

The council further stated, “These groups are also running a campaign of hate against minority communities through social media and other platforms.” They warned that such activities could escalate into widespread communal violence at any moment.

The organization emphasized, “Provocative and inflammatory activities of this nature are completely unacceptable in a democratic and pluralistic society.” They urged the Bangladesh government to take immediate and strict action against communal forces to maintain social harmony and peace.

Additionally, the council demanded the immediate arrest and severe punishment of those involved in the insult to Lord Ram’s image and incitement of religious sentiments. They called upon all secular citizens, social organizations, and democratic political parties to unite and voice their opposition against these activities.

Meanwhile, local media reports indicate that the administration has halted the construction of a proposed large statue of Lord Ram in Palashbari. Shyamal Kumar Mahant, an advisor to the temple, recently announced this decision. Critics allege that this move was made under pressure from Islamic extremist groups.

Salam Uddin Shoaeb Chowdhury, editor of the Bangladeshi newspaper Blitz, also expressed concern over the situation, stating that activities related to the temple project were suspended following opposition from local jihadist and Islamist organizations. This incident has sparked a renewed debate in Bangladesh regarding religious freedom and the protection of minorities.
