Controversy Arises Over UP Police Recruitment Exam Question

New Delhi, March 15: Priyank Kanungo, a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), has raised objections regarding a question in the Uttar Pradesh police recruitment exam. The question offered “Pandit” as an option for the term “opportunistic.” Kanungo stated that identifying and humiliating any group based on caste is a violation of their human rights and deeply hurts their sentiments.

Sharing a photo of the question paper on the social media platform X, Kanungo condemned the use of the term “Pandit” as a synonym for “opportunistic.” He emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and infringe upon the rights of individuals.

Kanungo further mentioned, “We are taking action based on the complaints received.” The question in the exam asked candidates to select a word for the phrase “changing according to opportunity,” providing four options: “Pandit,” “opportunistic,” “sincere,” and “virtuous.”

In light of the controversy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath adopted a strict stance on the matter. He instructed all recruitment board chairpersons to ensure that no disrespectful comments are made regarding any individual, caste, religion, or community.

CM Yogi stated that such remarks are completely unacceptable. He directed that all paper setters be informed and habitual offenders should be banned immediately. This issue will also be included in the memorandum of understanding for paper setters.

It is noteworthy that the Uttar Pradesh police recruitment exam took place on March 14 and 15, with 1,090 examination centers established across the state. The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board invited applications for 4,543 positions under the direct recruitment of 2025. A total of 1,575,760 candidates applied, including 1,166,386 men and 409,374 women.
