New Delhi, May 18: Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has filed a notice demanding privilege proceedings against Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. This request follows Pradhan’s allegedly derogatory remarks about parliamentary committees while discussing measures to prevent the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy.
Ramesh accused the minister of undermining the dignity of Parliament and neglecting the decay within the Ministry of Education, ultimately jeopardizing students’ futures.
In a letter addressed to Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan, Ramesh highlighted comments made by the education minister during discussions on reforms at the National Testing Agency (NTA) last week. According to Ramesh, Pradhan made remarks regarding opposition members, Parliament, parliamentary committees, and the report preparation process. He stated that the minister’s conduct constitutes a serious breach of privilege and contempt of the House.
Ramesh emphasized that this is a precise case of privilege violation and contempt, warranting appropriate action, especially since the Education Standing Committee is one of the eight permanent committees of the Rajya Sabha.
The Congress MP further alleged that Pradhan deliberately diminished the reputation and stature of the standing committee, which is characterized by its bipartisan nature.
Ramesh asserted that the minister’s comments amount to accusations of malicious intent against members of parliamentary committees. He described the education minister’s remarks as highly objectionable and aimed at discrediting MPs, parliamentary committees, and the Parliament of India.
He added that parliamentary committees are extensions of the Indian Parliament, making it entirely appropriate to refer to them as “mini-Parliaments.” Accountability of the executive to the legislature and its parliamentary committees is a fundamental principle of India’s democratic framework. The minister’s controversial remarks clearly reflect and expose his disdain for Parliament, parliamentary committees, members from all political parties, and India’s constitutional democracy.
