New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : Congress leader Udit Raj has voiced serious concerns regarding the Nandigram by-election, questioning both the BJP’s actions and the electoral process. He described the withdrawal of the TMC candidate’s nomination and the arrest of the Congress candidate as undemocratic, accusing the BJP of systematically undermining its allies.
Raj stated, “Our party’s General Secretary, Venugopal, has noted that the seizure of the TMC symbol is highly undemocratic. What’s this ‘envelope’ issue? Just like in Nandigram, pressure, bribery, or fear must have been used against the TMC candidate, forcing them to withdraw. This indicates that democracy in the country has collapsed.”
Regarding the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, he emphasized that this incident confirms the coercion faced by TMC candidates. “If the Congress candidate had also chosen to stay out or refused to contest, they wouldn’t have faced arrest. This shows that the TMC candidate was certainly intimidated or bribed. It is entirely undemocratic.”
Raj further pointed out that the BJP was once a regional party itself. “Had Congress employed such tactics, the BJP would never have emerged. The BJP made alliances with Shiv Sena, which was a significant party, and now it has overshadowed them. Congress has never done this with its allies,” he remarked.
He also highlighted the deteriorating situation in Punjab, stating, “The law is virtually nonexistent. The Punjab government is being run from Delhi. The state is engulfed in substance abuse, and the law and order situation is dire.”
