Congress Questions Election Commissions Integrity Amid New Appointments in West Bengal

New Delhi, May 12: Following the formation of the BJP government in West Bengal, the Congress party has raised concerns regarding the appointments of the Chief Secretary and Chief Advisor. Manoj Kumar Agrawal, the former Chief Electoral Officer, has been appointed as the Chief Secretary, while Subrata Gupta, who served as a special role observer, has been designated as Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that these appointments indicate a lack of impartiality from the Election Commission, suggesting it has acted in favor of the BJP. He described the situation as a collusion between the Election Commission and the BJP, asserting that efforts to conceal this collusion are absent.

Ramesh alleged that approximately 2.7 million individuals were denied the right to vote during the West Bengal assembly elections. He claimed that the process of removing names from the voter list was strategically implemented by the Election Commission to benefit the BJP electorally.

He emphasized that there is no attempt to hide this collusion. These appointments serve as evidence that the Election Commission was not impartial and was solely working to benefit the BJP. The elections were conducted while disenfranchising 2.7 million people, a tactic he argues was cleverly orchestrated by the Election Commission to provide electoral advantages to the BJP.

As of now, there has been no official response from either the BJP or the Election Commission regarding these allegations.

It is noteworthy that the West Bengal government recently appointed Manoj Kumar Agrawal, a 1990 batch IAS officer, as the new Chief Secretary. Previously, he was the Chief Electoral Officer and oversaw the 2026 assembly elections.

Additionally, Subrata Gupta, a retired IAS officer from the 1990 batch and a special role observer appointed by the Election Commission, has been named Chief Advisor to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The announcement was made following Adhikari’s swearing-in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday.

Subrata Gupta is a retired IAS officer from the West Bengal cadre and a technocrat, having graduated from IIT Kharagpur.
