New Delhi, March 24: Congress MP Vivek Tankha shared his thoughts with a news agency regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling on religious conversion. He emphasized that this is not a new law but an existing one. The Supreme Court and High Courts have long stated that any person from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category who converts will lose their status. This rule applies only to SC individuals, not to those from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.
He mentioned that there must have been a case in the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which was subsequently corrected by the Supreme Court. This is not a new development. Tankha further elaborated on the conflict surrounding Ajit Jogi, who claimed his ST status after converting to Christianity. The case against him was related to his SC status, as he could not be both SC and Christian simultaneously.
Regarding the introduction of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the Gujarat Assembly, Tankha stated that the BJP has implemented the UCC in various regions, including Uttarakhand. However, he expressed uncertainty about the benefits of state-specific laws, arguing that the UCC should be a national law. He criticized the BJP for pushing their agenda through state-level legislation, asserting that the UCC is fundamentally a national issue.
On the crisis in West Asia, he noted that Prime Minister Modi has indicated that this is a time for unity across the nation. There is no doubt that the country is not fully united. He appreciated that the Prime Minister refrained from criticizing the Congress or mentioning Jawaharlal Nehru, stating that such speeches are what the nation expects from its leader.
