New Delhi, March 19: Internal differences within the Congress party have come to light as two prominent MPs, Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, voiced their support for the central government’s approach to West Asia amidst rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. While the Congress party has been critical of the government, both leaders emphasized that India has adopted a balanced and pragmatic stance, keeping its national interests in mind.
In an article, Shashi Tharoor defended India’s ‘silence’, stating it is not a moral weakness but a part of responsible diplomacy. He referenced India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s non-alignment policy, arguing that India has historically balanced principles with pragmatism.
Tharoor wrote, “Non-alignment did not mean avoiding a moral stance; it meant recognizing the necessity of maintaining distance from major global conflicts for the sake of national sovereignty and security.”
He noted that India is currently pursuing a ‘multi-alignment’ policy, maintaining relationships with various global powers while prioritizing its national interests. Tharoor acknowledged that the ongoing conflict against Iran is not justified under international law, but India’s silence is not an endorsement; rather, it is a carefully considered decision.
He stated, “The government’s consideration of how a statement might impact the country’s economy and strategic position is not moral surrender but responsible governance.”
Similarly, Manish Tewari recently supported the central government’s position during an event. He pointed out that multiple conflicts exist in West Asia, making it challenging to support just one side.
Tewari remarked, “This is not India’s fight. We have always maintained a limited role in this region, so it is wise to keep our distance.” He highlighted India’s strategic autonomy, emphasizing that protecting national interests while maintaining balance is the right approach.
Meanwhile, the opposition continues to question the government’s alleged silence and its delayed response to the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader. Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi has also criticized the government on this issue through an open letter.
However, the support from these two senior Congress leaders for the government’s stance reveals clear divisions within the party, potentially weakening the opposition’s accusations.
