Guwahati, May 6: Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), stated on Tuesday that the party respects the public mandate from the recently concluded assembly elections. He emphasized that Congress will continue to work for the state’s development both inside and outside the assembly.
During a press conference, Gogoi expressed gratitude to voters who supported Congress and mentioned that the party would also reach out to those who did not back them in the elections. “We accept the public mandate and are thankful to those who voted for us. We will also engage with those who did not support us,” he said.
The Congress leader praised party workers, especially those on the ground, for their dedication despite numerous challenges during the campaign. Gogoi noted, “Our workers have shown perseverance and commitment. We have witnessed the rise of a new Congress.”
He also expressed appreciation to senior party leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Jitendra Singh, for their support and guidance during the election process.
Acknowledging that the party did not meet its expectations in terms of seat numbers, Gogoi affirmed that Congress would play a constructive role by providing suggestions for the state’s development both inside and outside the assembly. “Even though we did not secure the expected number of seats, we will continue to raise issues that matter to the people of Assam and stand firmly with them,” he stated.
Commenting on the election results, Gogoi noted that the party anticipated tough competition in several constituencies. However, he remarked that the final results in many areas were surprising. “We expected close contests in several places, but the outcomes in many constituencies are difficult to understand,” he added, hinting at potential concerns regarding the results.
Looking ahead, Gogoi announced that a meeting of all newly elected Congress legislators would be convened on May 9 to formulate the party’s future action plan in the state following the election results.
