Chennai, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The DMK has announced the postponement of its annual ‘Mupperum Vizha’ event following the sudden illness of party president MK Stalin. The celebration was scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Anna Arivalayam’s Kalaignar Arangam in Chennai.
DMK General Secretary Durai Murugan confirmed the postponement and stated that a new date for the event will be announced later. All related festivities planned for Tuesday evening have also been delayed. Earlier in the day, Stalin’s absence from the celebrations marking the birthday of DMK founder and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai raised concerns among party officials.
However, the party did not disclose the nature of Stalin’s illness or whether he has been advised to rest. The ‘Mupperum Vizha,’ or ‘Triple Celebration,’ is one of the most significant annual events on the DMK’s political calendar. It commemorates the birthdays of social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Thanthai Periyar) and Annadurai, as well as the founding of the DMK itself.
Annadurai was born on September 15, 1909, in Kanchipuram. He was an eloquent speaker, writer, and advocate for social justice and autonomy for the state. He founded the DMK in 1949 after parting ways with Periyar’s Dravidar Kazhagam. Annadurai served as Tamil Nadu‘s Chief Minister in 1967 and played a crucial role in renaming Madras to Tamil Nadu. He passed away in February 1969.
Periyar, born on September 17, 1879, in Erode, led the Self-Respect Movement and campaigned against caste discrimination, social inequality, superstition, and the denial of rights to women. His rationalist and social justice principles laid the ideological foundation for the Dravidian movement, profoundly influencing both Annadurai and the DMK.
The DMK was established on September 17, 1949, and traditionally hosts a grand event that combines these three occasions, honoring senior members, celebrities, and contributors to the Dravidian movement. This year’s event was set to award prizes named after Periyar, Anna, Kalaignar, Pavendhar, and MK Stalin. Party workers and awardees were informed of the postponement, with expectations that the party leadership will assess Stalin’s health and availability before announcing a new date.
